The legal team handling the BP Settlement in Principle are working furiously to finalize details before the Settlement in Principle will be submitted for Court Approval. The target date for presenting it to the Court is April 16. But now, action from the Florida Attorney General may delay the process.

On Friday, Florida State Attorney General Pam Bondi asked a federal judge in New Orleans to delay preliminary approval of the Settlement in Principle. Bondi is apparently concerned about a lack of information regarding the terms of the Settlement in Principle, and how exactly it would affect Florida individuals and businesses that suffered damages and loss in the wake of the April 20, 2010 oil spill.

According to the information that is available, the Settlement in Principle would cover claims from specific geographic areas—in Florida, claims would be limited to panhandle and west coast residents; Bondi, however, points out that the oil spill caused economic losses across the state.

At this point, the Florida Attorney General is asking for the judge to delay approval and to release additional information about the Settlement in Principle and how it would affect potential claimants across the state.

Individuals who suffered losses or damage due to the oil spill and who have questions about the Settlement in Principle can turn to Businesses by the Beach for assistance in understanding what it means for them.
