BP Settlement Program Expected to Begin Paying Claims This Month

Comments Off

The Court-Appointed Claims Administrator for the BP Settlement Program has announced that claimants could be seeing payments as early as mid-July. This is good news for Gulf Coast residents who have now been waiting for over two years to see recovery from the devastating oil spill in April 2010. It also shows the efficiency of the settlement program.

The Court-Supervised Settlement Program just went into full operation in June and already, according to the publicly available data, 18,426 claims have been submitted, with another 5,524 in progress. To date, nearly 30,00 individuals and business have registered with the Settlement Program to receive claim submission information and forms.

The Claims Administrator, Patrick Juneau Jr., expects these numbers to continue increasing as the public becomes more informed about the settlement process, eligibility requirements, and how to submit a claim. Both individuals and businesses are eligible to submit claims under the BP Settlement and those claims can cover a wide variety of losses, including both damage to property and economic losses suffered because of effects of the BP oil spill.

In addition to the official settlement website, a coalition of plaintiffs’ attorneys working on the settlement have organized under the name Businesses by the Beach to provide outreach and assistance to Gulf Coast residents and businesses affected by the oil spill.
