BP Medical Settlement Establishes Health Outreach Program

Comments Off

In addition to providing compensation for Gulf Coast residents and clean-up workers who suffer from specific medical conditions related to the 2010 oil spill, the medical benefits settlement establishes what is called the “Gulf Region Health Outreach Program.” This is a medical program that is intended to benefit the Gulf Coast in general.

Under the terms of the settlement the Gulf Region Health Outreach Program is intended to “expland capacity for and access to high quality, sustainable, community-based health care services” in Gulf Coast communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The program contemplates primary care, behavioral and mental health care, and environmental medicine.

The Program itself is made up of four specific projects in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle:

  • A $50 million grant for the Primary Care Capacity Project, to expand and improve access to health care in underserved Gulf Coast communities;
  • A $36 million grant for the Mental and Behavioral Health Capacity Project, to address behavioral and mental health needs, expertise, capacity and literacy;
  • A$4 million grant for the Community Health Workers Training Project, to train community health workers on peer listening, community resiliency and related issues; and
  • A $15 million grant for the Environmental Health Capacity and Literacy Project, to expand and improve environmental health expertise, capacity and literacy
